Statement by the Official Opposition on the end of the mission in Afghanistan

Official Opposition Defense critic Jack Harris (St. John's East) made the following statement regarding the end of the mission in Afghanistan:

"As Canada officially marks the end to its mission in Afghanistan today, New Democrats stand together in honouring the immense sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. Spanning more than twelve years, the Canadian mission in Afghanistan cost the lives of 158 soldiers, one diplomat, one journalist and two civilian contractors.

As the last of Canada’s soldiers return home, we honour the memory of so many who lost their lives during this mission.

At the same time, we must not forget that the road toward lasting peace in Afghanistan is still long. The Canadian government must redouble its development and diplomatic efforts to ensure that Canada can leave a legacy of greater peace, prosperity and freedom for all Afghans."
