Statement by the Official Opposition on the death of Angèle Arsenault

NDP MP Yvon Godin (Acadie – Bathurst) made the following statement on the death of Acadian singer Angèle Arsenault:

“It was with much sadness that we learned of the passing of P.E.I. Acadian singer-songwriter Angèle Arsenault.

Acadia and Canada have lost an important musical figure. Despite the success of her artistic career, Arsenault remained as genuine in person as she was in her songs.

She put Acadia on the map and touched the hearts of people across Canada and in Europe with her songs filled with realism and simplicity. In the 1970s, her popularity among both Francophones and Anglophones won her a Felix award – the equivalent of a Juno in Quebec.

On behalf of New Democrats, we extend our deepest sympathies to Arsenault’s family and friends.
