Statement by the Official Opposition on the 97th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge

The Leader of the Official Opposition Thomas Mulcair (Outremont) made the following statement on the anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge:

“Today we remember a key moment in Canadian history – the 97th anniversary of the Canadian battle at the Vimy Ridge.

“In April 1917, for the first time in history, four Canadian Corps fought together to take control of the ridge. The victory marked the beginning of a new era for Canada, and contributed to forging our identity as a people.

“The courage and determination of Canadian soldiers who put their lives on the line for the safety of others will remain forever etched in our memory. We honour the 7,000 injured soldiers and the 3,600 who lost their lives that fateful week.

On this day of commemoration, our thoughts also go out to the brave men and women who continue to serve Canada, at home and abroad, in the name of freedom.”
