Statement from the NDP on the abolition of the tampon tax

NDP MP Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) and the NDP Status of Women critic Mylène Freeman (Argenteuil—Papineau—Mirabel) made the following statement following the vote on the abolition of the federal tax on feminine hygiene products:

“Thanks to an NDP motion and the efforts of a number of women and organizations, the tax on tampons will soon be a thing of the past.

“Tonight, the House of Commons voted unanimously for the abolition of the federal tax on feminine hygiene products, effective July 1st. Through the strong leadership of the NDP and the concerted efforts of all those concerned, this tax, which unfairly penalizes women, transgender and other people with menstrual periods, is in the process of being eliminated.

“The result of tonight’s vote is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together.”
