Statement by the NDP on World Mental Health Day

Official Opposition Health Critic Libby Davies (Vancouver East) made the following statement to mark World Mental Health Day:

“On World Mental Health Day, New Democrats stand in solidarity with Canadians affected by mental illness. We also salute their loved ones who stand by them and provide important support during difficult times.

Mental health issues affect over six million Canadians. However, due to discrimination and stigma far too many people face this reality in isolation, silence and shame. Nearly 4,000 Canadians die by suicide every year and it is the most common cause of death for people aged 15 to 24.

New Democrats recognise the importance of ensuring that Canadians who are living with mental illness have access to the supports they need. We remain committed to working with the provinces, First Nations, Inuit and Métis governments to implement a mental health strategy in line with recommendations from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

We want to see real leadership on mental health, working with communities to fight stigma and foster recovery, ensure better access to treatment, and reduce the disparities in supports and services across the country.”
