Statement by the NDP on Ukraine’s Independence Day

The Leader of the NDP Tom Mulcair made the following statement on Ukraine’s Independence Day:

"On behalf of all New Democrats and myself, I would like to extend my best wishes to the Ukrainian people on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day. The presence of 1.2 million Canadians of Ukrainian descent in our country is proof of the unique relationship that our two nations maintain.

It has now been 24 years since the Ukrainian people fought because they believed in democracy. Today, this young democracy must again defend their freedom against Russia. I therefore take the opportunity on this day to reiterate the commitment of the NDP to enforce respect of international law. We must support and defend the democratic aspirations of the Ukrainians.

It is also our duty to continue working with our international allies to maintain pressure on Russia so that we can finally come to a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Let me once again, on behalf of all New Democrats, convey to you my warmest greetings on the occasion of this 24th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. "
