Statement from NDP on the Tiananmen Square Massacre
Almost a quarter of century ago today, Chinese students rose up against corruption and gathered in Tiananmen Square to push for a more open and just society. Images of the stand-off between students and the large army tanks will forever be seared in our memories.
While this event was not the tipping point of the pro-democracy movement, China has since then undertaken important economic reforms which have lifted millions out of poverty. However, economic reforms are not enough.
A great country such as China must also ensure workers rights and must strive towards the protection of human rights. By building upon the everlasting relationship between the two countries, Canada and China can foster greater democratic dialogue on human rights.
