Statement by NDP Leader following National Chief Atleo’s resignation

Official Opposition leader Tom Mulcair (Outremont) made this statement following National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo’s resignation:

“It was with sadness I learned of Shawn-A-in-chut Atleo’s resignation. As National Chief, as Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, as AFN Regional Chief for British Columbia, or as a teacher, he has shown himself to be an inspiring leader. I thank him for all the work he has done in support of Canadians and aboriginal communities across the country.

“Catherine and I had the pleasure of meeting National Chief Atleo and his wife Nancy in their home. I have great admiration for the determination he has demonstrated in his efforts to improve the living conditions of Aboriginal peoples.

“His passion and conviction will remain a source of inspiration for the NDP as we continue to fight alongside the AFN to build a better future for all First Nations peoples in Canada.

“We will continue to work together with the AFN, alongside Aboriginal leaders and advocates across Canada, and build a respectful nation-to-nation relationship.”
