Statement by the NDP on the kidnapping of Nigerian schoolgirls

NDP Foreign Affairs critic Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) issued the following statement regarding the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Nigeria:

"The NDP is disturbed and appalled by the kidnapping of girls from a school in northern Nigeria."

"More than 200 girls were abducted on April 14, reportedly to be sold into marriage to Boko Haram militants. The girls were taken while writing a high school physics exam.

The Government of Canada must condemn this horrific crime in the strongest terms, and join our international partners in offering assistance to the Government of Nigeria to ensure that the girls are safely returned to their families."

"The repeated perpetration of physical and sexual violence by Boko Haram is shocking and reprehensible. Those responsible for this and other attacks must be brought to justice."
