Statement by the NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

"New Democrats are very concerned about the escalation of conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the potential for the deepening of the humanitarian crisis in the region.

"We echo the United Nations Security Council in calling for an end to outside support for the M23 rebels. Impunity for violations of international and humanitarian law must come to an end.

"Canada must work in support of United Nations efforts to stabilize the region and seek an immediate ceasefire and take an active role in building a long-term and sustainable peace in the region. The adoption of international mechanisms to end the trade of conflict minerals is key to beginning this peace process."
