Statement from NDP candidate Paul Dewar on release of Mohamed Fahmy
“New Democrats were overjoyed to hear the news that Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy has been pardoned this morning.
“Mr. Fahmy has been through a horrible ordeal and we all feel for what he and his family have had to face.
“This is welcome and long overdue. I think many of us were frustrated to see a Canadian citizen and journalist treated like this.
“New Democrats consistently raised this issue in Parliament and urged the Prime Minister to personally intervene with
Egyptian President al-Sisi
on Mr. Fahmy’s behalf.
“While this is happy news and we look forward to his quick return to Canada, it is also important we learn lessons from this difficult situation about how we can better protect Canadian citizens abroad.”
