Statement by MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan on the occasion of Tamil New Year

As the first person of Tamil origin to be elected to Canada’s parliament, it gives me great pleasure to wish all Tamil Canadians Happy New Year.

The beginning of a new year is a period of renewal and optimism. During this New Year celebration people gather to break bread and renew the bonds of friendship and family.

As we reflect on the year that was and look with hope to the future, Canadians of Tamil origin can reflect with pride on our strength in the face of adversity and the deep determination that has allowed us to overcome hardship. This sense of purpose is something that all Canadians share.

On behalf of Canada’s New Democrats I wish peace, prosperity and happiness to you and yours as you celebrate this New Year.
