Statement from Libby Davies on Health Accord National Day of Action

Today New Democrats stand with Canadians participating in the National Day of Action for a 2014 Health Accord. We join their call, urging the Conservative government to come back to the table and work together with the provinces and territories to renew the Health Accords in 2014.

This Day of Action shows that Canadians want the federal government to take the lead in planning for the future of our public health care system. The federal government must work with the provinces and territories to ensure all Canadians have access to high quality health care across the country.

The Conservative government has failed to make significant progress on initiatives set forth in the 2004 health accords, including expanding home care and long-term care; reforming primary care; and getting prescription drug costs under control. They deserve better from this government. That's why it is more important than ever that the Conservative government commit to a 2014 Health Accord, so that Canadians can continue to receive the care they need.

Federal New Democrats believe the federal government has an important role to play in providing health care. We are committed Tommy Douglas’ vision of universal healthcare and believe it must be sustained; beginning with renewal of the Health Accords in 2014.
