Statement from the Leader of the Official Opposition, Tom Mulcair, for the 70th anniversary of D-Day

On June 6, 1944, nearly 21,000 Canadians took part in the Normandy landings with the goal to free Europe from the grips of the Nazi regime.

70 years on, the courage and determination that they displayed still serves as a model of valour.

We will never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice and cut their young lives short for the benefit of all.

We will never forget the soldiers who fought on those beaches so that we could stand here today as free men and women.

On behalf of all New Democrats, I would like to take this opportunity on the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings to let all our veterans know just how grateful we are for their valiant service.
