Statement by the leader of the Official Opposition on Thai Pongal
The leader of the Official Opposition Tom Mulcair (Outremont) made the following statement on Thai Pongal:
“As Canadians of Tamil descent gather to celebrate Thai Pongal, I would like to extend them my best wishes for a joyous time.
Thai Pongal is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of Canadians of Tamil heritage to the social, cultural, and economic prosperity of our country.
That is why New Democrats are proud to have proposed a bill in the House of Commons to recognize January as Tamil Heritage Month, a celebration that appropriately coincides with the harvest festival, Thai Pongal.
We believe that the literature, language, arts and traditions of the Tamil community have enriched the cultural mosaic of our nation.
Through our shared values of social justice, family and community New Democrats will continue to work with Canadians of Tamil heritage for a more peaceful, fair and just world for all.
Happy Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month!
Thai piranthaal vazhi pirakkum!”
