Statement by the leader of the Official Opposition on the 50th anniversary of the Maple Leaf flag

The leader of the Official Opposition, Tom Mulcair, made the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Canadian national flag:

“The NDP is pleased to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian national flag this year.

“Several events are organized every year to celebrate the replacement of the British-inspired “Red Ensign” with the emblematic maple leaf in 1965. This launched a new era for Canada in which the country began to forge a new national identity and unity.

“The flag holds great meaning for all Canadians, and trumps all differences in race, language, belief or opinion.

“Today, the NDP joins all Canadians in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Canadian national flag.”
