Statement by Heritage Critic Pierre Nantel on Rebelle’s Oscar nomination

Quebec directors and producers have made a name for themselves again this year bringing worldwide fame to our cinema with their Oscar nominations.

New Democrats congratulate director Kim Nguyen for the nomination of his film Rebelle in the best foreign-language film category.

After Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies and Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar, Kim Nguyen’s Rebelle puts Canada in line for a third Oscar in this category.

The NDP would also like to congratulate Yan England and Ariel Nasr for their short films Henry and Buzkashi Boys which were nominated in this category. The NDP is also proud of Canadian author Yann Martel. The film adaptation of his novel Life of Pi by Ang Lee is up for best picture and received 10 other nominations, including best song for Pi’s Lullaby written by Toronto composer Mychael Danna.

The Academy Awards will be held on February 24 in Los Angeles. The NDP wishes the best of luck to directors and their teams during the ceremony.
