Statement from Charlie Angus on the Conflict of Interest Commissioner's Reports

NDP MP Charlie Angus (Timmins—James Bay) issued the following statement:

"I have enormous respect for the role and office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner. In the course of my work as a Member of Parliament and as my party’s Ethics Critic, I strive for a high standard of transparency and accountability, which is why I try to communicate with media and the public about my work in the House of Commons.

The Commissioner opened this investigation because I responded to questions from the media about my views on whether or not an investigation was warranted into the conduct of two Liberal MPs, which he found broke the rule restricting public comments about investigations.

This is the first time that the Commissioner has chosen to enforce this provision of the Conflict of Interest Code. It is the Commissioner’s prerogative to enforce the Code as he sees fit, and I respect his decision to do so.

In the future, I will abide by the rule about public comment regarding ethics and conflict of interest investigations."
