Statement by Nycole Turmel on second anniversary of Haiti earthquake

On this day marking the second anniversary of a devastating earthquake in Haiti, I urge the government to continue their aid efforts to this country. I thank all Canadians who have helped this nation on its road to recovery from this devastating event.

I am happy to learn that Canada is going to finance a project to resettle 20,000 people, but more than half a million Haitians are still living in makeshift shelters and miserable conditions. It is crucial that our government and those of other donor nations live up to their commitments to help with the reconstruction of Haiti.

The future of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission is uncertain. The Commission’s mandate, responsible for coordinating international aid and targeting priorities, came to an end last October and to date there is no indication it will be renewed.

It is absolutely essential that the financial aid promised reaches Haiti and is used to meet the objectives set out and the most pressing needs. The Commission’s watchdog role is crucial in assuring donor nations of the use of funds they disburse.

Despite economic uncertainty in the last few years, Canadians have shown generosity toward Haiti through their donations and their active presence on the ground. New Democrats would like to acknowledge the remarkable work of numerous organizations, humanitarian workers and Canadian volunteers who helped improve the living conditions of Haitians and give them hope.
