Statement by New Democrat Leader on the Anniversary of the Earthquake in Japan and Tsunami in the Pacific

As we mark the first anniversary of the earthquake in Japan and Tsunami in the Pacific, I cannot help but recall the heart-breaking images and stories in the news. Such devastation moved us all.

As the most destructive natural disaster in Japanese history, the National Police Agency reports that the total death toll reached 15,854, with 3,271 still listed as missing.

Canadians demonstrated an immediate outpouring of compassion and action by donating generously to various aid organizations and offering their support to the people of Japan and in the Pacific region. One year later, our thoughts remain with the victims and survivors.

Our prayers remain with the people of Japan and the Pacific as they continue to recover and rebuild.
