Statement by NDP leader Tom Mulcair on World Press Freedom Day

On this World Press Freedom Day, all New Democrats join me in paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 46 journalists lost their lives in 2011 around the world – twice as many as the previous year. This number is far too high.

Many publications are still censored or suspended throughout the world, while journalists are kidnapped or muzzled.

Freedom of the press is fundamental in a democratic society. Canada must be a role model for the respect of fundamental rights, including freedom of the press.

The NDP will continue to defend the freedom of expression of journalists so they can do their essential work in peace and safety.
