Sims to Kenney: focus on reuniting families, not bullying critics

OTTAWA – An open letter from more than 80 members of the legal profession specializing in immigration that condemns Jason Kenney’s attempt to muzzle criticism is proof that the Minister has his priorities wrong, according to the NDP.

“It is a shame that this Minister’s Office focuses energy and resources on pursuing those that criticize it,” said NDP Immigration Critic Jinny Sims (Newton – North Delta). “Those efforts would be much better spent on ensuring that our immigration system is working in a manner that permits families to reunite.”

The open letter followed a rebuke of the Minister from the Law Society of Upper Canada after his office tried to silence a lawyer for suggesting he played a role in British citizen Conrad Black’s return to Canada.

“Jason Kenney should apologize for his reckless attacks against a member of the bar,” said Sims. “Conservatives need to learn from their mistakes and stop bullying professionals who dare to speak out against their agenda.”

Sims pointed out that doctors who are opposing Conservative cuts to refugee health care and scientists concerned with climate change have been met with similar attacks from the government.

“We have an immigration system that is a mess – with families waiting years to be reunited with loved ones and visitor visas rejected without cause,” said Sims. “But here we have a Minister who is more concerned with getting even with his critics. Frankly, it’s outrageous.”
