Reality Check: Missing $3.1 billion – what about the rest of the money?
The Auditor General reported to parliament about how $3.1 billion of the $12.9 billion allocated to 35 departments for the Public Security and Anti-Terrorism Initiative simply can’t be accounted for.
But what about the $9.8 billion that was tracked?
The Auditor General had something interesting to say:
“PSAT [Public Security and Anti-Terrorism Initiative] objectives were broadly stated, and we found that activities proposed by departments and agencies to address them were equally broad. Departments and agencies spent funds on… the services of a security expert to advise a host country on security matters related to the staging of an international sporting event. Nevertheless, activities were deemed to be within the Initiative objectives.”
– Auditor General of Canada, spring 2013, paragraph 8.25
Yesterday we asked Tony Clement about this international security expert. He had no answer.
Canadians deserve better.
