Reality Check: Liberals want new committee for Senators to investigate where they live
The question “where do you live?” is generally something most folks can answer.
But if you’re a high rolling Liberal or Conservative Senator with multiple homes, things can get a bit confusing.
In the original audit on Mike Duffy’s expenses, Deloitte found the Senate rules regarding residency “very clear”. Of course, that was before the Senate Committee whitewashed the report behind closed doors.
Now the Liberals are proposing a special committee of the Senate to examine these “very clear” rules. The Chair will be given a salary boost of $11,200 on an annual basis for “working” on this committee, and the Vice-Chair will receive a $5,600 salary boost.
And given that this committee might work outside the normal Senate Tuesday to Thursday work week, there remains the possibility that Senators might claim per-diems for Mondays and Fridays.
Canadians deserve better.
