NDP Statement on the start of Ramadan

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement to mark the start of Ramadan:

“Muslims in Canada and around the world are marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

For Muslims, this begins a month-long journey of spiritual renewal, selfless service and prayer. It’s a time for fasting from sunrise to sunset, but it’s also much more than that.

For Muslims, Ramadan represents a month of self-reflection, and an opportunity to look for ways to improve the lives of those around you.

It also means that for the next few weeks, families and communities across Canada will come together on a nightly basis for iftar, the breaking of the fast. This is an opportunity reconnect with loved ones over the dinner table, strengthen bonds with old friends and share in all the beauty the month has to offer.

The lesson of selflessness, self-reflection and spiritual renewal is something we can all be inspired by.

On behalf of all New Democrats, may this be a peaceful month that you take full advantage of with family, friends and loved ones.

Ramadan Mubarak.”
