Polar ice cap melting while Conservatives look the other way

Environment minister has moral obligation to immediately address the problem

In the face of the dramatic melting of the polar ice cap, New Democrats are calling on the federal government to stop denying evidence and take action to address the dramatic melting of Arctic ice.

An oceanographer from Laval University, Louis Fortier, released evidence this week showing that, at its current rate, the ice cap could melt entirely by 2020 – or even as early as 2015.

“The environment commissioner has already reported that the Conservatives have absolutely no effective plan or strategy to deal with climate change,” said Official Opposition Environment critic Megan Leslie. “The fact that the polar ice cap is melting faster than expected is more proof that the Conservative sector by sector approach is simply not working.”

All the Conservatives are doing is blaming the other political parties for their own failures in this area.

“The minister seems to think that Canadians will buy his empty words. But he’s wrong,” said NDP deputy critic for the Environment, Anne Minh-Thu Quach. “The government must act now to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.”
