Packed rooms mark first week of ‘Keep Your Promise’ tour

OTTAWA – After his first week touring ridings held by Liberal MPs to discuss the government’s broken promise to modernize Canada’s voting system, NDP MP Nathan Cullen (Skeena- Bulkley Valley) is feeling renewed hope of getting electoral reform back on track.

“I visited Toronto, Kitchener and Guelph and at every stop I was met with a packed room of engaged Canadians, wanting to make our democracy better,” said Cullen, the NDP Critic for Democratic Reform. “Despite obvious feelings of betrayal, these participants were focused on how to move forward.”

Noticeably absent from the events were the local Liberal MPs whom Cullen had invited to join the conversation and respond to the decision to abandon the commitment to make 2015 the last election held under the old voting system which is ill-suited to a multi-party system and causes massive distortions.

“The promise of making every vote count wasn’t just a slogan—it was a solemn commitment Justin Trudeau and Liberal candidates made to the voters who elected them,” said Cullen. “There is a clear desire from people across this country to have their representatives show up so we can work together to create a democracy that truly represents Canadians.”
