One down, Ninety-nine to go

The long embattled Liberal Senator, currently under investigation for alleged breach of trust, has called it quits after months of being at the centre of the Senate expense scandal, a scandal that has laid bare everything that is wrong with the unaccountable, unelected and undemocratic Senate.

Appointed by Liberal PM Jean Chrétien in 2003, Mac Harb became a household name after his dubious housing expenses came to light.

Harb has repaid the $230,000 he owed Canadian taxpayers for his improper expenses, perhaps even more that the amounts being repaid by his fellow high-spending Senators like Pamela Wallin and Mike Duffy.

Senator Harb will be remembered for pushing the envelope and finding new ways to insure taxpayers kept funding his entitlements, including claiming residence expenses on a house uninhabitable for three years, then keeping the claims going while owning a mere 0.01% of it.

A silver lining for Mr. Harb is Liberal leader Justin Trudeau offer to welcome him back to the Liberal Party if he pays the money back, despite the fact he's under a breach of trust investigation by the RCMP.

Let’s hope some of the 99 other Liberal and Conservative Senators decide to follow him into retirement. After all, with 99 more resignations, we could save taxpayers well over $90 million a year.

Canadians deserve better; it’s time to abolish the Senate.
