Niki Ashton nominated for YWCA Women of Distinction Award

NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill) has been nominated for a 2014 YWCA Women of Distinction Award in recognition of her commitment to leading positive change in Northern Manitoba.

“It’s an honour to be considered for this award and to be in the company of these five remarkable women,” said Ashton. “Every day in Thompson, and communities across Canada, thousands of women are working to uplift their communities, and it's important to celebrate the commitment so many women make.”

Ashton is one of six nominees this year and was a strong advocate even before being elected as an MP. She has been involved in the fight for human rights at the local and national level, including fighting for same sex marriage, the elimination of racism and the achievement of women's equality.

As MP, Ashton has been a strong voice on northern issues and women's issues, including the need to end poverty and demanding a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women.
