New Democrats hold first caucus meeting ahead of 42nd parliament

British Columbia MP, Peter Julian, named NDP House Leader

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair convened the first meeting of his new caucus this afternoon. Speaking via teleconference, Mulcair welcomed newly elected and re-elected MPs and outlined the caucus priorities for the 42nd Parliament.

“New Democrats will be fighting for the priorities of Canadians, including strengthening healthcare, taking action on climate change and beginning a new era of relationships with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples,” said Mulcair. “We’re committed to making parliament work for Canadians and our remarkable team of NDP MPs is ready to press the Liberal government to deliver meaningful and positive change.”

Mulcair also announced that Peter Julian (Burnaby-New Westminster) will serve as NDP House Leader and stressed that he is eager to welcome his new team to Ottawa to get down to work.
