NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar released the following statement:
New Democrats strongly condemn North Korea’s decision to undertake a third nuclear test, in defiance of Security Council sanctions. This action is dangerous and highly provocative.
We call on the Canadian government to work with international partners to increase diplomatic pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program. Canada should also offer its full support to international efforts aimed at preventing nuclear proliferation. New Democrats remain committed to working towards peace and security in a world without nuclear weapons, and call on the government to engage with the United Nation’s 2008 five point plan for nuclear disarmament.
