New Democrats call for action in the wake of Bangladesh tragedy
OTTAWA — New Democrat Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) has tabled a motion to conduct a parliamentary study of the tragedy in Bangladesh and take action to prevent similar tragedies in future.
“We all have a responsibility to act,” said Dewar. “Business as usual is not an option. It’s time for action to improve working conditions overseas and prevent future loss of life.”
Dewar’s motion states:
That the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development undertake a study on ways to encourage, facilitate, and require responsible corporate practices by companies supplying and manufacturing products in developing countries for Canadian consumers, in response to last month's tragedy in Bangladesh and the clearly demonstrated desire of Canadians to improve working conditions overseas.
