The NDP’s Foreign Affairs Critic is very concerned by the violence against Coptic Christians in Egypt.
“I strongly condemn the attacks on Egyptian Copts and their churches,” said Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre). “All Egyptians must be able to express their beliefs peacefully and publicly, without fear or intimidation.”
Dozens of churches have been looted, burned, or vandalized throughout Egypt over the past three months. This week, the violence spread into the capital city with a shooting at a church on the outskirts of Cairo that killed four people, including two young girls.
“I urge the Canadian government to call directly on Egyptian authorities to ensure protection of the basic freedoms of all Egyptians, including the Coptic minority,” said Dewar. “Canada can also play a role in supporting the efforts of civil society groups in Egypt to strengthen intercultural understanding. The vast majority of Egyptians are united against the recent violence, and a small minority cannot be allowed to destroy and divide with impunity.”
