NDP’s plan will fix Canada’s broken immigration system

After ten years of Stephen Harper’s failed approach to immigration, Tom Mulcair will honour the contribution that new Canadians make to our country by fixing the damage the Conservatives have done.

“Canada is a country of immigration. It’s what built this great country. I couldn't be prouder than to tell you that my wife, Catherine, immigrated to Canada and she's one of the many people who has contributed so much and I think we can be proud of that tradition,” said Mulcair during tonight’s leaders’ debate on the economy. “Under Mr. Harper's Conservatives, we've been closing the door more and more.”

An NDP government will work with the provinces to recognize foreign credentials to help new Canadians find work in their field and offer temporary foreign workers a path to citizenship. By removing barriers to family reunification and ensuring that Canada does its fair share in helping with the Syrian refugee crisis, Tom Mulcair will put us back on track towards living up to Canada’s proud tradition of welcoming newcomers.
