NDP works to end violence against Aboriginal women

The NDP is joining forces with the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) to urge the Conservative government to finally take action to end violence against Aboriginal women.

“Violence against women is an epidemic that impacts more families and communities every month,” said NDP Status of Women critic Niki Ashton (Churchill). “The NDP is working with the Native Women’s Association of Canada and tabling a petition signed by thousands of Canadians, in the hope that this will push the Conservatives to act.”

In 2013, Ms. Ashton tabled Motion 444 calling on the federal government to create a national action plan to address violence against women that includes an independent national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada. As of 2010, the NWAC had documented more than 600 cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women and girls.

“The NDP will keep pushing for a national inquiry into the deaths and disappearances of First Nations, Métis and Inuit women,” said Ashton. “Aboriginal women must be included in all stages of this inquiry, from design through process and implementation.”
