NDP: Workers are Paying the Price of Trade Uncertainty

OTTAWA – The House of Commons Trade Committee had an emergency meeting in Ottawa on Tuesday to discuss US-Canada trade uncertainty. In the meeting, NDP International Trade Critic Tracey Ramsey focused on how the government can protect Canadian workers from President Trump’s current steel and aluminum tariffs and looming threats of auto tariffs.

“As a result of Trump’s actions, the Canada-US trade relationship is extremely precarious right now, and workers are paying the price,” said Ramsey. “Canadians are still waiting for our retaliatory tariffs to kick in and we still don’t know what supports for workers and their communities the government will provide.”

The NDP also called on the government to ensure that the proposed retaliatory tariffs will not have inadvertent negative impacts for industries such as recreational boating and furniture retail.

“Workers in Canada’s steel and aluminum industries are facing extreme uncertainty, and industries are very worried about additional tariffs,” said Karine Trudel, NDP Deputy International Trade Critic. “The Liberals need a concrete plan to protect the jobs of hundreds of thousands of Canadians. We can’t afford to wait any longer.”
