NDP will call for an emergency committee meeting on Canada Post

New Democrats want a parliamentary committee to be called back in order to review Canada Post’s decision to eliminate home delivery services, kill good jobs, drastically increase postage rates and cut rural post office hours.

“The Conservative cuts will destroy Canada’s long-cherished postal services,” said NDP critic on Transport, Municipalities and Public Transit, Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina). “Canada Post made its decisions based on a sham consultation, they announced it only hours after Parliament rose for the holidays and the minister responsible for Canada Post has been missing in action.”

In a letter to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Chow gave advance notice that the New Democrat members of the committee intend to recall the committee for an emergency meeting on Canada Post cuts.

“Canadians deserve better than a lump of coal and no ministerial accountability,” said Chow. “We believe the committee must meet to consider the implications of these changes—which will have a direct impact on the lives of people in our communities and the long-term future of Canada Post.”
