NDP: US Duties on Welded Pipes are yet Another Hit to Canadian Industry

While Canadians grapple with economic uncertainty caused by Trump’s erratic trade policy, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced yet another attack on Canadian industry by implementing anti-dumping duties on large-diameter welded pipe. Several Canadian companies, including a Regina-based steel producer already reeling from Trump’s outrageous tariffs, will take a hit when these duties take effect next week.

“From coast to coast, workers are suffering during these tough economic times. After slapping tariffs on our steel and aluminum industries, the Trump administration has hit Canadian companies and workers with another devastating blow,” said Tracey Ramsey, NDP International Trade Critic. “The NDP is calling on the government to implement the NDP’s proposal for a National Task Force on Trade Tariffs, focused on quickly responding to additional U.S. actions and defending Canadian jobs in industries targeted by U.S. tariffs.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s actions will effect Canada, China, Greece, India, Korea and Turkey. Canada’s rate is set at a devastating 24.38 per cent, which will have serious consequences for Canadian industries already reeling with the impacts of previous tariffs from the U.S.

“While Trump continues to use bullying tactics to threaten Canadian industries, the NDP will stand up to protect workers,” added Ramsey. “The government must act swiftly to protect steel producers impacted by this announcement.”
