NDP urges Conservatives to implement recommendations for Hong Kong

The NDP is calling on the Canadian government to implement the unanimous recommendations of the Foreign Affairs Committee following its study of the situation in Hong Kong.

“The NDP proposed this study because the situation in Hong Kong matters” said NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar. “There are over 295,000 Canadians in Hong Kong and approximately 500,000 people originating from Hong Kong here in Canada.”

The Foreign Affairs Committee report was presented today in the House of Commons. The Committee recommended that the government state its support for universal democratic suffrage in Hong Kong; reiterate its support for established agreements and principles guiding Chinese-Hong Kong relations; and encourage dialogue to stimulate broadly acceptable governance reforms.

“Last November, the House of Commons unanimously adopted an NDP motion supporting democracy in Hong Kong,” added Dewar. “Now is the time for the government to act on the Committee’s recommendations.”
