NDP taking action to protect transit operators

OTTAWA – NDP MP John Rafferty (Thunder Bay – Rainy River) will introduce a private member’s bill in the House of Commons designed to protect public transit operators from violence while on the job.

“Given recent events in Thunder Bay and other municipalities across Canada, it is clear that transit operators and bus drivers need greater protection both on the job and in the courts,” said Rafferty. “Harassment or assault against bus drivers is completely unacceptable.”

Two Thunder Bay transit drivers were recently assaulted by members of the public. There have also been similar events in other cities including Montreal, Sudbury and Vancouver. Rafferty’s bill is intended to serve as a deterrent to violent acts against bus drivers and increase overall safety on public transit.

“Bus drivers are dedicated to getting Canadians where they need to go safely,” said Rafferty. “New Democrats are committed to making sure that their workplace is as secure as possible.”
