NDP tables bill to establish a National Hockey Day

MP Linda Duncan (Edmonton – Strathcona) has tabled a Private Member’s Bill calling for the establishment of a National Hockey Day.

“Hockey is loved by Canadians of all ages across the country as our national winter sport,” said Duncan. “In community rinks across the country, families and neighbours come together to play hockey or cheer on their local team. My goal of celebrating National Hockey Day is to help encourage the participation of boys and girls in the sport that is loved by so many.”

The bill recognises that hockey is a sport enjoyed by all ages, genders, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.  It acknowledges the role of community associations in fostering the sport, and of hockey’s ability to forge a great bond between communities.  It would establish the third Friday in February as National Hockey Day.

“Any opportunity to interest young people in sport and shine a spotlight on the amazing bonds sport builds in our communities is a great thing,” said Official Opposition Sport critic Matthew Dubé (Chambly – Borduas).
