NDP statement on World Refugee Day

NDP Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship critic Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East) made the following statement on World Refugee Day:

"On this World Refugee Day, New Democrats join Canadians across the country in highlighting the persistent struggle of those forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, or persecution.

The latest United Nations figures reveal that a record 65 million people were displaced in 2015 and the global refugee count has reached almost 20 million, 4.8 million of whom are Syrian refugees.

Canada has a long history of opening its doors to refugees. Much more than an international obligation, we must recognize the fundamental rights of those facing such incredible hardship. We must do all that we can to resettle and support those forced from their homes so that they may find, and flourish in a new one.

Most recently Canadians across the country have rallied together to welcome thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing some of the worst violence imaginable. Today, we also take this opportunity to recognize their work and spirit of generosity.

Above all, today we acknowledge the sacrifices and courage of refugees around the world. We commit to building a stronger, fairer and more inclusive society for them, and a more peaceful world."
