NDP statement on World Environment Day

NDP Environment critic Megan Leslie (Halifax) made the following statement on World Environment Day:

“Today we mark World Environment Day, to increase awareness about the need to protect and preserve our environment.

“New Democrat MPs work tirelessly to ensure that we will leave a sustainable legacy to future generations.

“Our most recent NDP victory for the environment was our motion to add microbeads to the list of toxic substances under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Despite receiving unanimous consent in the House of Commons, the Conservatives have yet to take action to protect our lakes, rivers and coastal communities from microbeads.

“New Democrats understand that the best way to deal with pollution is to prevent it in the first place. This is why, well before the recent oil spill off the BC coast, we urged the Conservatives to reconsider cuts to Coast Guard marine safety, environmental response and clean-up capacity. In a recent short-sighted move, the Conservatives even voted against the practical NDP motion to protect our coastlines from oil pollution. The Conservatives keep promising ‘world-class’ oil spill response, but fail to understand that talking points can’t clean up oil spills.
“Canadians can trust Tom Mulcair’s NDP to fix the damage done by Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. We have a plan to protect the environment and grow the economy. Together we will build a fairer, greener, more prosperous Canada.”
