NDP Statement on Trans Day of Remembrance

New Democrat LGBTQ critic Randall Garrison (Esquimalt–Saanich–Sooke) made the following statement on Trans Day of Remembrance:

“New Democrats stand with people in communities across Canada and around the world to remember all those whose lives were lost to transphobic violence. Today, we re-dedicate ourselves to working to end discrimination against Transgender, Transsexual and gender variant people.

The threat that Trans people live with every day is very real and violence continues to ravage our communities. Until protections are enshrined in the laws of this country, the journey towards equality will be stalled.

As Canada’s progressive opposition, the NDP will continue the fight to see gender identity and gender expression added as prohibited grounds of discrimination in the Canadian Human Rights Act and as a basis for hate crimes in the Criminal Code.

As the New Democrat LGBTQ critic, I will work hard to reintroduce the Trans Rights Bill and to press the federal government to build a more inclusive Canada where Trans people can be free from discrimination and violence.”
