NDP statement on Student Mobilization Day

NDP Postsecondary education critic, Dan Harris (Scarborough-South-West), made the following statement on Student Mobilization Day:

"On this Student Mobilization Day, the NDP is proud to support everyone fighting for better access to affordable, quality postsecondary education. Improving access to postsecondary education is an integral part of building a fairer, more equitable society where nobody is left behind.

"As a nation, we can and should be ensuring that our colleges and universities remain accessible to all Canadians, regardless of financial situation. We believe that the federal government should be doing more to improve the current situation by playing an active role in promoting access to education, especially among our first nations.

"For instance, the government should be responding to the explosion in applications to the Student Loans and Bursaries Program by increasing the number of grants and bursaries available.

"You can be sure that the NDP will continue to listen to your concerns, and that a well-funded, quality post-secondary education system will remain one of our top priorities to ensure that future generations have more opportunities than we were given."
