NDP Statement on Samar Badawi’s Arrest by Saudi Arabia

NDP foreign affairs critic Hélène Laverdière (Laurier—Sainte-Marie) made the following statement in reaction to Samar Badawi’s arrest by Saudi Arabia:

“New Democrats condemn the arrest and detention of activist Samar Badawi, the sister of Saudi blogger Raif Badawi. We call on foreign affairs minister Stephane Dion to condemn the arrest by immediately summoning the Saudi ambassador in Ottawa for explanation.

“The NDP also believes that Prime Minister Trudeau must personally intervene in this matter and request the release of Raif Badawi, his lawyer Waleed Abulkhair, and his sister, Samar.

“These cases once again highlight the Saudi authorities’ disregard for human rights and the freedom of expression of Saudi citizens. Canada must stand up for its values and show leadership in defending human rights at home and abroad.”
