NDP Statement on Nelson Mandela International Day – for Freedom, Justice and Democracy

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

"One hundred years ago today, Nelson Mandela was born. The world did not yet know what he would become, one of those rare individuals whose wisdom, courage and faith transcends time and place.

His fight against injustice was dignified and unwavering as he guided his country away from apartheid and racism and towards racial equality and democracy – at the risk of his life, and at the price of his freedom.

He continues to be a source of inspiration for all – and his commitment to justice reminds us that one person can indeed change the world. Let us take a moment to reflect on the meaning of his own words: "It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build."

On this Nelson Mandela International Day, I encourage all Canadians to give back, to love, and to have the courage to help one another. Let’s honour his memory and build a world that is more peaceful and just."
