NDP Statement on National Volunteer Week

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued following statement for National Volunteer Week:

"During National Volunteer Week, we shine a light on the commitment and dedication of Canadians across the country, who give up their time to lift up those around them.

Volunteering is an act of selfless service - a commitment to contribute to something larger than yourself, without expecting anything in return. This beautiful message of compassion and selflessness is inspirational, and Canadians from coast to coast to coast embody this spirit of giving every day.

Organizations across Canada working to combat inequality, advocate for environmental issues, assist those who are unable to care for themselves, and more, rely on the selflessness of volunteers. They are often the unsung heroes of our society. It is also important to remember that volunteerism can often be relied upon to provide services and care, in spaces where government has a responsibility and a duty to step up and provide leadership.

We can build a country where we invest in social programs that provide services that reduce inequality, from health care to housing, and build a society that actually believes in lifting everybody out of poverty.

The theme for this year is particularly important: 'Celebrate the value of volunteering - building confidence, competence, connections, and community'. While selfless service has no direct return, the opportunity to learn new skills, make meaningful connections with others and find purpose in our everyday lives is where we find the true value of volunteering that we all benefit from.

This week, and every week, let us appreciate the work of volunteers across Canada, and recommit ourselves to building a country where we lift each other up so that we all rise."
