NDP statement for National Public Service Week

NDP Treasury Board critic Mathieu Ravignat (Pontiac) made the following statement to mark National Public Service Week:

“Today, New Democrats join Canadians in saluting the members of our public service. Every day, this dedicated corps helps Canadians from coast-to coast-to-coast obtain the services they need.

“Public servants protect our environment and food supply. They develop cutting-edge policy and scientific research. They ensure our access to frontline services, from health care to pensions to EI.

“The NDP has a proud history of working with Canada’s labour movement to defend workers’ rights. Together we have helped ensure that workers have access to a safe workplace and a secure retirement; and benefits like paid parental leave.

“However, we are facing a Conservative government that has taken an axe to benefits and services that Canadians have relied on for generations; and even takes pride in ideological attacks on the public service and organized labour.

“Successive Conservative and Liberal governments have constantly pushed the limits in trying to politicize our public service. Enough is enough. It’s time for a new relationship—one based on respect for the non-partisan professionalism of our public service. Canadians should be able to trust that their government is working with public servants to provide better services—not attacking them for political gain.

“Canadians deserve better.”
