NDP Statement on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour and celebrate the contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people and reflect upon the outstanding achievements and diverse histories of Indigenous peoples across this country.

These fundamental achievements must be recognized and celebrated, as they have and continue to help shape a more just and inclusive society.

The indigenous communities across this vast land are a vital part of Canada's past, present and future – this is why we must build a society that is respectful and informed of Indigenous issues.

This is why I am so proud of my colleague, MP Romeo Saganash, and his work to enshrine the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) into Canadian law. Romeo’s historic bill successfully passed in the House of Commons this session, marking a fundamental change in the legislative framework for Canada’s engagement with Indigenous communities.

For all Canadians, this is truly a day to appreciate, and an opportunity to reflect on the most important relationship that we have as a country – that being our relationship with the first people of this land.

That’s why New Democrats are so proud of MP Georgina Jolibois’ bill calling for National Indigenous Peoples Day to become a statutory holiday – and why we will continue to call on the government to pass this legislation and take another step towards reconciliation by giving today the honour it deserves.

So today, let us acknowledge the outstanding achievements, history, and diversity of Indigenous people in Canada, and together, recommit to forging an even brighter future for all of us.”
